Allen Hall
Allen Hall is named in recognition of Levern Hamlin Allen, the first African-American student at what was then Western Carolina College. Allen arrived at Western Carolina College on June 11, 1957, three years after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision. That summer she enrolled in and completed a nine-week graduate school summer session. Allen received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from WCU in August 2006 in recognition of her contributions to society as a pioneer of integration and social change, and for her service to the university.
