The team at Health Services is comprised of healthcare professionals that strive to meet the health care needs of the academic community and to enhancing the physical, psychological, environmental and health education needs of our campus. In other words, our goal is to keep students well and in the classroom.
Health Services is located in the Bird Building on Upper Campus, parking is available
in the rear.

As part of the enrollment process, newly admitted students must provide immunization records to complete registration for classes and provide proof of health insurance.
Before utilizing Health Services, students should familiarize themselves with their medical history and understand how to assist Health Services in coordinating care with their other medical providers.
Health Services’ strives to provide excellent healthcare to our students while they are away from home, as well as provide education to our patients to assist them with advocating for their own health needs.
Students that are charged the Student Health Fee on the WCU statement of tuition and fees are eligible for care, regardless of medical insurance coverage. Students are NOT required to enroll in the UNC sponsored health insurance plan to be eligible for services.
Students enrolled in residential credit hours are required to pay the student health fee as part of the WCU tuition and fees semester billing. The student health fee provides access to medical care, counseling and psychological care and emergency medical care via WCU EMS at Western Carolina University.
Students enrolled in any summer session(s) are required to pay the student health fee through tuition and fee billing. Any student paying the health fee has access to Health Services throughout the summer.
Students that are not enrolled in summer sessions but are pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester and were enrolled the previous spring semester are eligible for Health Services, but will be assessed an office visit fee for each encounter instead of the student health fee.
Students do not have to be enrolled in the StudentBlue Health Plan to utilize Health Services.
Students that are enrolled in distance education programs are not subject to mandatory fees and therefore, are not eligible for care in Health Services.
Health Services providers offer integrated, accessible and affordable health care
to our student population by addressing the majority of personal health care needs
through the development of an ongoing partnership with each patient.
Health Services is pleased to assist with your health and wellness by offering convenient, accessible, affordable care for our faculty and staff.
Health Services does not replace your primary care physician but instead compliments that care by providing quick assessment, diagnosis and treatment of common complaints such as colds, sore throats, headache, or upset stomach. Our motto is "Keep them well and keep them in class," we feel that applies to you as well as our students.

Health Services strives to provide affordable care that allows patients to access care in a timely manner.
Charges
Office visits are covered by the Student Health Fee, separate charges for the visit to the provider will NOT be charged to the patient.
Procedures, lab testing done onsite in Health Services are billable to the patient and can be filed with most insurance companies for payment.
Insurance Claims
In-Network: Health Services is designated in-network with the following insurances: Aetna, Aetna
NC State Employee Health Plan, BCBS and MedCost. Any balances for co-pay or co-insurance
amounts as indicated by the insurance company as patient responsibility will be transferred
to the WCU student account for payment after notification of insurance processing.
Out-of-Network: Health Services billing staff will file courtesy claims to other insurance plans that
accept claims. Payment from out-of-network insurances will be made directly to the
patient. Charges incurred at the time of service are transferred to the WCU student
account for payment.
Do Not Accept Claims: Health Services is unable to present claims to certain insurance plans or other responsible parties. These entities will not accept claims. Veteran’s Affairs (VA), Cherokee Indian Hospital (CHIA), Medicare plans, Medicaid plans
Reference Lab Charges with LabCorp:
Many of the lab tests that Health Services providers order cannot be performed in the Health Services lab. Those tests are sent to LabCorp, along with the patient’s insurance information. LabCorp is a national company that has an extensive network of insurance contracts. Most patient’s insurance plans will be in-network, including Medicare and Medicaid plans. LabCorp will file insurance first and then bill the patient directly for any amount designated as patient responsibility.
In adherence to the WCU Absence Notification Protocol, Health Services does not provide class absence notification notes.
Students can obtain a proof of visit from their Medicat Patient Portal.

Patients are welcome to provide feedback to Health Services via our feedback form. This feedback may be submitted anonymously and is considered 'spot' feedback, not a formal grievance.
SUBMIT A CONCERN, COMPLIMENT OR SUGGESTION
A Grievance is an official statement of a complaint about something believed to be wrong or unfair. The Director of Health Services is responsible for investigating Grievances, providing feedback to the patient, determining any corrective actions as needed and following the issue to its' resolution. Please note that a formal Grievance cannot be anonymous.
WCU EMS is a student-staffed emergency ambulance service serving the WCU community. All medics are certified EMT's and WCU EMS is supervised by Health Services and Harris EMS service. This service is in operation 24/7, during Fall and Spring semesters. To obtain EMS assistance dial 828.227.8911.
