Dance Team 2018-2019

2018-2019 Dance Team

The WCU Dance Team is a vital part of the Catamount community.  The team brings spirit and energy to the football and basketball seasons and makes special appearances at campus and community events. In addition, the team participates in National Dance Alliance Collegiate Nationals each year in April.  Those interested in joining this dynamic team can participate in our upcoming tryouts.

Dance Team Tryouts

Saturday, April 27th, 2019
Registration: 9:45am
Tryouts: 10am-5pm
Western Carolina University Campus Recreation Center, Studio 1 (Upstairs)

Please wear black athletic attire.  Bring running shoes, as well as any dance shoes you need for multiple types of choreography. 

Requirements for tryouts are as follows:
Technique (Leaps, Double Turns, Triple Turn, Turns in Second, Tow Touch and Other Jumps)
Dance Choreography (All choreography will be taught at tryouts and includes pom, hip hop, and jazz)Times
Times one-mile run in under 9 minutes

Tryouts are for a commitment for the entire 2019-2020 academic year.  Each team member is responsible for $1,000 in fundraising, attending all team events, and participating in team community service.

Tryouts registration forms and assumption of risk forms are required to participate and will be available on-site.  If you will not be 18 by tryout day, please contact sage@wcu.edu  prior to the tryout to complete the assumption of risk form with a parent/guardian signature.

Can't make it to tryouts?  video tryouts are being accepted on a rolling basis through April 27, 2019.  Any questions can be directed to WCU Dance Team Advisor, Shauna Sage, at sage@wcu.edu 

Video tryouts must include the requirements listed on the right hand side of this page.  Please wear all black athletic dance attire in your video tryout. Video tryouts can either be emailed to sage@wcu.edu or mailed to: WCU Campus Recreation Center, Attn: Shauna Sage, 379 Memorial Drive, Cullowhee, NC 28723.  Please keep in mind that video tryouts are judged slightly harder due to the ability to re-take video. 

In addition to the video with the video tryout requirements, please also submit the following form/information with your video tryout:

  • Tryout Information Sheet
  • 1-Mile Run Time
  • Answers to the following questions:  Why are you interested in becoming a member of the Dance Team?  What characteristics do you possess that will make you a strong member of the team?  After reviewing the commitment sheet (below), do you foresee any conflicts with the commitments listed?  In order to be on the Dance Team, you must maintain a 2.5 GPA - Do you foresee any challenges during 2019-2020 managing both your academic workload and your commitment to being a member of the WCU Dance Team (Ex: internships, clinicals, study time, etc.)?
