Office of the Chancellor

A portrait of Acting Chancellor Alison Morrison-Shetlar

Last fall marked a pivotal transition for Western Carolina University. Chancellor David O. Belcher, who had served at the helm of WCU for six and a half years, announced his decision to begin medical leave effective December 31.

It was with a great sense of responsibility and privilege that I assumed the role of Acting Chancellor on January 1, having previously served four and a half years as Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. It was also in January that University of North Carolina System President Margaret Spellings called the first meeting of the Search Committee tasked with recruiting our next great university leader.

During this time of transition, my focus will be on sustaining our university's incredible forward and upward momentum. Under Chancellor Belcher's leadership, our enrollment has increased significantly, we have completed major capital projects including the construction of Noble Hall, and we have secured funding and broken ground on the Tom Apodaca Science Building, which will truly transform our campus. Chancellor Belcher has left us in the best possible position to continue moving ahead in implementing NC Promise, telling the amazing story of WCU's high-quality programs, and elevating WCU's visibility across the state and region. He also laid the foundation for our Lead the Way comprehensive campaign, which sets out to reach the ambitious goal of $60 million raised for scholarships by Spring of 2019.

In the spirit of 'setting the table' for our next chancellor, I plan to concentrate my efforts as Acting Chancellor in a few key areas: primarily legislative advocacy and fundraising in support of the Lead the Way Campaign. We have a busy few months ahead of us. We will have challenges, but we will take them on and we will be successful. Chancellor Belcher is counting on us. I take comfort in knowing that Western Carolina University's faculty and staff are the best in the System.
In everything I do, I will work to ensure our continued institutional focus on delivering an unmatched educational experience that prepares students for a successful career and an impactful life. That has been and will continue to be at the heart of every decision we make as a thriving, growing university.
