    • Experience demonstrating that the applicant has chosen a career in physical therapy with thoughtful consideration and with a realistic understanding of the scope of physical therapy practice. Volunteer or paid experience with a physical therapist in at least two different clinical settings is strongly recommended.
    • Physical therapy practice requires certain aptitude, abilities, and skills to ensure success and client safety. Students accepted into the physical therapy program must attest to meeting these essential functions.

  • Prerequisites: All students are required to have completed the following courses: biological science, physical science (either chemistry or physics), social science and statistics. Other CSD prerequisite courses may be required of students to meet state licensure and ASHA requirements. Students admitted to the program with an undergraduate degree in a field of study other than communication sciences and disorders may be required to take additional coursework.

    • Special Education - a written essay describing professional goals and including a one to two-page single-spaced essay addressing one of the following topics (please include the prompt in your essay):
      • Why should a society provide a "free and appropriate" education to students with disabilities who will not be able to achieve academic or other skills at the same level as students without disabilities?
      • What are the most important skills or characteristics a teacher should possess, and why do you say these are the most important?
      • Describe your position on inclusion of students with disabilities in general education. What are the benefits of inclusion and the potential barriers?
      • It is a commonly held belief that gifted students do not need special services because they can "make it on their own." Why is it important for schools to provide programming for gifted and creative students?

  • 2 letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's aptitude for graduate study
  • Writing Sample - An ideal writing sample should be eight double-spaced pages or more in length; it should employ MLA or APA documentation and use appropriate secondary sources, and it should demonstrate the applicant's ability to analyze a subject and construct a clear argument. It will be evaluated on the basis of content, rigor, depth, and style. This type of essay is typically produced in senior-level English classes. Other writing samples will be considered.

The Graduate School at WCU accepts student applications throughout the year. It is recommended that applicants submit a completed application and all supporting materials at least four weeks prior to the start of first term. Nevertheless, it is best to apply early because limited seats are available each semester.

GRE General Exam – recommended scores 150 on Verbal Reasoning, 141 on Quantitative Reasoning, 3.5 on Analytical Writing.
Only applicants who have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.25/4.0 or higher will be considered for conditional admission, which allows them to take classes for one semester while preparing for and taking the GRE. All others need to submit GRE scores in order to have their application considered. Applicants who already have earned a graduate degree do not have to submit GRE scores.

  • Three years of successful full-time teaching (or in a related, certified position within a school)
  • Hold or be eligible to hold a North Carolina Class A teaching license or a comparable license from another state. Please submit a copy of your license.
  • Three online recommendations including one from your current administrator
  • Completed district verification form noting years of school level experience
    • MSA/PMC/NCSELP Initiative Candidate Evaluation Rubric to be completed by applicant's principal or district leader.
    • Current resume highlighting leadership experience
