The spring edition of The Magazine of Western Carolina University will be available only in electronic format, one of several cost-savings steps taken by the university in response to the state’s budget crisis as the 2008-09 fiscal year is winding down.
“Even during an economic downturn, it is critical that we continue to communicate with university friends – our alumni, benefactors, faculty, staff and students,” said Bill Studenc, managing editor of The Magazine of Western Carolina University. “Unfortunately, we do not have e-mail addresses for all alumni and other recipients of the regular print edition so that we can invite them to check out our new online edition.”
To let as many alumni and friends as possible know about the temporary change to an online publication, the university is attempting to increase the size of its e-mail address database. Among the topics of stories in the spring edition are a $1.1 million scholarship fund created by a man who once operated Buncombe County’s “beach club of the mountains,” a behind-the-scenes look at a campus emergency drill, a preview of summer camps for kids and upcoming cultural arts activities, and the 25th anniversary of the nation’s largest river cleanup day.
The Magazine of Western Carolina University is produced by the Office of Public Relations in the Division of Advancement and External Affairs. The magazine was recognized earlier this year by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education District III with a “special merit award.” CASE is the leading educational association for professionals in the field of institutional advancement. District III encompasses the southeastern United States.
